Despite continuing efforts by the dentistry profession to educate the populace about the benefits of regular dentist visits and their importance to our overall general health, we still continue to lag behind the rest of the developed world in our attitude to dental care. Cost can be a factor, as can the often used excuse of being too busy, but behind many of these reasons is a deep-seated fear of dental treatment. Given that dentists now are highly skilled with a range of tools and techniques to minimize discomfort, it all seems an illogical response, but this doesn't make the fear any less real. The first thing that should be realized is that fear of the dentist Brisbane is quite common and is very real to the person concerned. This fear can cause them to feel shameful and embarrassed, especially if placed under pressure by their peers or family to explain it. There are strategies that can be helpful for people who fear the dentist. Initially, it’s important that the nervous patient finds a dentist who is sympathetic to their situation, and is willing to work with them to allay their fears. The dentist should be willing to explain a variety of solutions that could include sedation and hypnosis and assist the patient to feel comfortable about the procedures being performed. If the prospect of going into the examination “cold turkey” is still too daunting, easing into the experience is another option. By going in for an initial examination, then coming back for a cleaning prior to other procedures, the person becomes familiar with the dentist and the surroundings. There are also a number of sedation options available. The most familiar is Novocaine which now can be quite painless as the gum surface is numbed by rubbing on an anaesthetic prior to the injection. Taking a calming medication some time prior to coming to the surgery is also an option, as is nitrous oxide or laughing gas. General anaesthesia is also available and is attractive if there is a lot of work to be done which could include tooth whitening Brisbane. There is no comparison between the sometimes traumatic experiences that dental patients had forty or fifty years ago, and the atmosphere and technology available to patients today. As the old saying goes, there is nothing to fear but fear itself. http://www.rochedaledental.com.au |
