Orthodontics has now advanced to the stage where braces are a commonly accepted method of straightening teeth, and thanks to the use of ceramic brackets rather than metal ones, are almost invisible. Most of us understand what braces do and why they are needed, but if we had to explain just how braces work we could probably provide only the most basic of information. The lay person knows that wearing braces will eventually straighten teeth and that it involve wires, brackets and bands which need regular visits to the dentist to be tightened. Other than that, what goes on below the gum line is a mystery to most outside the orthodontic profession. Actually, the whole process is quite ingenious and uses the natural actions of the human body to achieve the desired outcome, along with, of course, the skill and knowledge of the Dentist Brisbane. The whole process relies on the pressure being exerted on the teeth by the wires attached to the brackets. This is how braces work. It is this pressure that moves the teeth. A bracket is attached to each tooth by either a bonding material like glue, or a metal band. A thin metal wire runs from bracket to bracket, and ligature elastic holds the bracket onto the wire. Some brackets don’t require this elastic. These are known as self-ligating brackets. The natural actions of the human body now combine with the braces to move the teeth. When the braces put pressure on the teeth the periodontal membrane, which is below the gum line, stretches on one side of the tooth and is compressed on the other, which loosens the tooth. Bone then grows in to support the tooth in its new position, a process which is called bone remodeling. Bone remodeling is a bio-chemical process which relies on sustained, load-bearing activity to make bones stronger. Conversely, in the absence of carrying a load, bones become weaker. By repeating both parts of the process over time, bone density increases to support the repositioned teeth. The brackets and wire are the artificial force that exerts and sustains the pressure needed for this bio-chemical process to work effectively. The wires are made of materials which are activated by body heat to increase stiffness. Because these wires want to retain their shape, they exert the pressure needed to begin and continue the bio-chemical process of bone remodeling. By strategically placing the brackets on the teeth and tying the wires to them, forces are applied to the teeth that, when sustained over time, move the teeth into the correct position.
